What is Allergy?

The term allergy is assigned to an abnormal response by the organism of an individual when it comes into contact with a specific substance, referred to as allergen.

We can find the following substances within these allegers:

  • Pollens
  • Fungus
  • Dust mites.
  • Foods.
  • Medication.
  • Hymenoptera venom

Allergic individuals (having a genetic predisposition to atopy) produce specific levels of an antibody named IgE; When a patient has been sensitized (whose body has produced IgE by repeated exposure to an allergenic substance such as pollens, mites) the allergen binds to the IgE of mast cells and these explode releasing histamine and other inflammatory substances, causing the characteristic symptoms of an allergic response.

The allergic reaction, its symptoms or the illnesses derived from it which are experienced by the organism of an individual, vary depending on the part of the body that is affected.

We would then find pathologies such as Hay fever, Asthma, Urticaria, Dermatitis or Eczema, and Anaphylaxis.
